World's Smallest, Longest-Lasting Rechargeable Neurostimulator To Treat Chronic Pain, Receives Food and Drug Administration And CE Mark Approvals

The medicine that help us: Cephalexin.

Cephalexin: uses

Cephalexin is a cephalosporin-type antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections ( e. g. , skin, bone and genitourinary tract infections ) . It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

This antibiotic only treats bacterial infections. It won't work for viral infections ( e. g. , common cold, flu ) . Unnecessary use or overuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness.

Cephalexin: how to use

Take Cephalexin by mouth usually every 6 or 12 hours, or as directed by your doctor. We may take this medicine with food if stomach upset occurs.

Antibiotics work best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant level. Therefore, take Cephalexin at evenly spaced intervals.

Continue to take Cephalexin until the full-prescribed amount is finished even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping this medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow, which may result in a relapse of infection.

Inform your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.

Cephalexin: other used

This section contains uses of Cephalexin that are not listed in approved professional labeling for drug but that may be prescribed by your health care professional. Use Cephalexin for a condition that's listed in this section only if it has been so prescribed by your health care professional.

Cephalexin may also be used before dental procedures in patients with artificial heart valves to prevent serious infection of heart lining ( bacterial endocarditis ) .

Cephalexin: side effects

Stomach upset, headache, fatigue, dizziness, or diarrhea may occur while use Cephalexin. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed Cephalexin because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than risk of side effects. Many people using Cephalexin don't have serious side effects.

Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur:

Tell your doctor immediately if any of these highly unlikely but very serious side effects occur:

Cephalexin may rarely cause a severe intestinal condition ( pseudomembranous colitis ) due to a resistant bacteria. This condition may occur while use Cephalexin while receiving therapy or even weeks after treatment has stopped. Do not use anti-diarrhea products or narcotic pain medications if we have following symptoms because such products may make them worse. Tell your doctor immediately if you develop persistent diarrhea, abdominal or stomach pain/cramping, or blood/mucus in your stool.

Use of Cephalexin for prolonged or repeated periods may result in oral thrush or a new vaginal yeast infection ( oral or vaginal fungal infection ) . Contact your doctor if we notice white patches in your mouth, a change in vaginal discharge or other new symptoms.

A serious allergic reaction to Cephalexin is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction include:

This isn't a complete list of possible side effects. If we notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Cephalexin: precautions

Before taking Cephalexin, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you're allergic to it; or to penicillins or other cephalosporins; or if we have any other allergies.

Before using Cephalexin, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of:

Kidney function declines as we grow older. This medication is removed by kidneys. Therefore, elderly people may be more sensitive to Cephalexin.

Cephalexin should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

Cephalexin passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Cephalexin: interactions

Your healthcare professionals ( e. g. , doctor or pharmacist ) may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for it. Don't start, stop or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with them first.

Before using Cephalexin, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products we may use, especially of:

Cephalexin may decrease effectiveness of combination-type birth control pills. This can result in pregnancy. You may need to use an additional form of reliable birth control while using this medication. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for details.

Cephalexin may cause false positive results with certain diabetic urine testing products ( cupric sulfate-type ) . Cephalexin may also affect the results of certain lab tests. Make sure laboratory personnel and your doctors know we use Cephalexin.

This document doesn't contain all possible interactions. Therefore, before using Cephalexin, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all products you use. Keep a list of all your medications with you, and share the list with your doctor and pharmacist.

Cephalexin: overdose

If overdose of Cephalexin is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. US residents can call the US national poison hotline at 1-800-222-1222. Canadian residents should call their local poison control center directly. Symptoms of overdose may include severe vomiting, seizures, blood in the urine.

Cephalexin: notes

Don't share Cephalexin with others.

Cephalexin has been prescribed for your current condition only. Do not use it later for another infection unless told to do so by your doctor. A different medication may be necessary in those cases.

Cephalexin: missed dose

If you miss a dose Cephalexin, use it as soon as we remember. If it's near time of next dose, skip missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose of Cephalexin to catch up.

Cephalexin: storage

Store Cephalexin at room temperature between 59-86 degrees F ( 15-30 degrees C ) away from light and moisture. Don't store Cephalexin in bathroom. Keep all medicines away from children and pets.

Properly discard Cephalexin when it's expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist or local waste disposal company for more details about how to safely discard your product.

St. Jude Medical, Inc. ( NYSE: STJ ) announced U. S. Food and Drug Administration ( Food and Drug Administration ) and European CE Mark approvals of Eon Mini™ , the world's smallest, longest-lasting rechargeable neurostimulator to treat chronic pain of trunk or limbs and pain from failed back surgery.

Slightly larger than circumference of a U. S. silver dollar, the Eon Mini neurostimulator has a thin 10 mm profile and weighs 29 grams ( approximately 1. 0 oz. ) . Its small size allows for a smaller incision, which gives physicians increased flexibility in selecting implant location and is intended to make site less visible and more comfortable for patients.

" Device size is an important consideration for many patients. The thin, small design should increase patient comfort, making it ideal for those whose body type requires a small device, " said Steven Rosen, M. D. , of Fox Chase Pain Management Associates in Philadelphia, Pa. " Along with its dimensions, the device's ability to provide high power output and long periods between recharges should make this an appealing option for many patients. "

Even with its small size, Eon Mini has longest-lasting battery life of any rechargeable spinal cord stimulation ( SCS ) device in its class. It is only small rechargeable neurostimulator to receive a 10-year battery longevity approval by FDA. For patients this means device should provide sustainable therapy and maintain a reasonable recharge interval for 10 years of use at high settings. The device's battery longevity also may mean that patients require fewer battery replacement surgeries.

The Eon Mini also allows patients freedom to comfortably recharge the device's battery while taking a walk, cooking a meal or shopping because charging system is fully portable. Additionally, Eon Mini has greatest recommended implant depth of any small rechargeable SCS device, so the device can be placed more discreetly, potentially making it less noticeable.

In addition, Eon Mini device features the following:

- Enhanced microchip and software ( NeuroDynamix™ ) technology that continuously selects the most efficient power management mode, preserving battery's capacity to deliver therapy.

- Constant current circuitry that automatically adjusts power output to deliver consistent therapy over time.

- programming capability that allows physicians to treat up to eight pain areas simultaneously to address complex pain patterns.

- A 16-contact header that's compatible with all St. Jude Medical SCS leads, giving physicians more control in designing system for optimal pain relief.

" The Eon Mini reflects our commitment to developing clinically relevant products to meet needs of chronic pain patients, " said Chris Chavez, president of St. Jude Medical's ANS Division. " Not only is Eon Mini the smallest, longest-lasting rechargeable neurostimulator available, it gives physicians and their patients more choices and more control in optimizing sustainable therapy. "

The Eon Mini design is based on field-proven platform of the Eon neurostimulator and almost three years of performance data and improvements to device. It will be available in both U. S. and Europe in third quarter of 2008.

Neurostimulators like Eon Mini and Eon are similar in function and appearance to cardiac pacemakers, delivering mild electrical pulses to spinal cord, which interrupt or mask pain signals' transmission to brain. More than 35, 000 patients in 35 countries have been implanted with St. Jude Medical neurostimulation systems. Patients can obtain more information about neurostimulation pain therapies at http: //www. PowerOverYourPain. com.

Chronic pain is a serious public health issue that remains largely under-treated and misunderstood. According to National Institutes of Health, 90 million people in the U. S. suffer from chronic pain. In Europe, World Health Organization estimates that one in five people live with chronic pain of moderate severity.
